Island
At the southern edge of the lake is a droplet-shaped island running several kilometers into the river mouth. The island is connected to the surrounding land by a pair of bridges carrying pedestrian, vehicular, and light rail traffic. There are also several smaller pedestrian bridges connecting trails and walkways.
The northern half of the island is occupied by Gray Academy, while the southern half is mostly forest preserve.
While the southern and eastern edges of the island are gently sloped, the western edge’s faster current has left the face steeper. Conversely, the northern edge of the island features a calm, sandy beach.
